For instance, if you make an even-money wager like even/odd, black/red, or hi/lo and the ball lands in the zero pocket, both sides of the bet lose. If you have two zero slots, then that doubles the chance that the ball lands on a spot where most players at the table lose. For this reason, basic European roulette has a house edge of 2.70%, instead of the house edge of 5.26% on the double-zero game.

Double-Zero Roulette

These wheels have both the green-0 and green-00 slots. This is the game called American Roulette, which has a house edge of 5.26%. This game is called American roulette because it was made famous (in the modern era) in Las Vegas. It’s played offline almost exclusively in North America.

In truth, this was the original form of the game. The double-zero wheel was the only one in existence until 1843, when French casino owners operating a gambling resort in Germany decided they could lure more customers with the single-zero wheel. Even-Money Bets and La Partage

Notice I always mention that the only wagers affected by la partage are the even money wagers. These are the 1:1 bets on red or black, high or low, and even or odd. All other wagers on the table are unaffected. Therefore, if you ever see a game with la partage rules, never make any bet except the even-money bets.

En Prison Rules

A similar rule to la partage is the “en prison” rule, which means “imprisonment” in French. Under this rule, if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands in a zero pocket, then the bet isn’t resolved immediately. Instead, your wagered money goes into prison for a hand. Whoever wins the bet is determined by the results of the next hand. If you win, you keep the money. If the dealer wins, the house keeps the money. In this way, imprisonment rules have the same effect on the house edge as la partage rules: European twenty-one’s house edge goes to 1.35% and American twenty-one’s house edge goes to 2.63%.
