Playing roulette for real money is a good idea in the right situations. If punters don’t know what they’re doing, they’ll end up playing with bad rules and losing a lot of money. Not all versions of the game are the same, which is why roulette newbies need to learn the differences. Those who know the best variations of roulette will find one of the best games in the casino, if you don’t want to spend a lot of time learning strategy lessons. This is one of the main reasons the game is so popular. Of games which require no strategy, only baccarat and craps have comparable odds.

Choosing Roulette Tables
The previous paragraph might have confused you. I said people should know the right rules, but no strategy exists. Finding the right table is the only strategy which applies. Once the ball starts spinning in the wheel, you have no control over the outcome of the game. Therefore, in a land-based casino, finding the right table is where you should focus your attention.
The first variation you should understand is the single-zero wheel. A table with only one zero slot (0) is much better than one with two zero slots (0, 00). These are the green pockets on the wheel. If you see a wheel with only the green-0, this is a single-zero wheel and you’re playing what they call European Roulette. This is the game made famous in Monte Carlo, and it’s closely associated with French roulette.
The reason this game is preferable is you have one fewer slot on the wheel, thirty-seven instead of thirty-eight. Most wagers you make on the table are going to lose if the ball lands on a zero. For instance, if you make an even-money wager like even/odd, black/red, or hi/lo and the ball lands in the zero pocket, both sides of the bet lose. If you have two zero slots, then that doubles the chance that the ball lands on a spot where most players at the table lose. For this reason, basic European roulette has a house edge of 2.70%, instead of the house edge of 5.26% on the double-zero game.
These wheels have both the green-0 and green-00 slots. This is the game called American Roulette, which has a house edge of 5.26%. This game is called American roulette because it was made famous (in the modern era) in Las Vegas. It’s played offline almost exclusively in North America.
In truth, this was the original form of the game. The double-zero wheel was the only one in existence until 1843, when French casino owners operating a gambling resort in Germany decided they could lure more customers with the single-zero wheel. Unless special rules exist, this game is always inferior to the one described above.
La Partage Rules
Two specific rules might change the equation, but both of those are rare in the American version of roulette. “La partage” means “the part, the division, or the share” in French. In this case, what it refers to is “one-half”. In la partage rules, if you make an even-money wager and the ball lands on a zero slot, then you only lose one-half of your original wager.
This rule is most often used in European roulette. For even-money wagers, the house edge is lowered from 2.7% to 1.35%. The rule is used in American casinos on occasion, especially in casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In these venues, the house edge on even-money wagers are lowered from 5.26% to 2.63%. Notice this house edge is 0.07% lower than European roulette without la partage is. State law requires the game in New Jersey to use these rules. To skirt these odds a bit, some Atlantic City casinos now offer Rapid Roulette, which increases your exposure to the house edge by speeding up the game.
Even-Money Bets and La Partage
Notice I always mention that the only wagers affected by la partage are the even money wagers. These are the 1:1 bets on red or black, high or low, and even or odd. All other wagers on the table are unaffected. Therefore, if you ever see a game with la partage rules, never make any bet except the even-money bets.
En Prison Rules
A similar rule to la partage is the “en prison” rule, which means “imprisonment” in French. Under this rule, if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands in a zero pocket, then the bet isn’t resolved immediately. Instead, your wagered money goes into prison for a hand. Whoever wins the bet is determined by the results of the next hand. If you win, you keep the money. If the dealer wins, the house keeps the money. In this way, imprisonment rules have the same effect on the house edge as la partage rules: European twenty-one’s house edge goes to 1.35% and American twenty-one’s house edge goes to 2.63%.
When you go online, you’ll find the novel idea that single-zero and double-zero games are offered side-by-side. If special house rules are not stipulated which give the advantage to the American game, always choose European roulette in these situations. Otherwise, you’re throwing away money.
French Roulette Online
Online casinos often offer a third option: French Roulette. This game offers announced bets (“called bets”), which are also known as French bets. These rules were introduced in Monte Carlo, also, The wagers themselves have French names, such as voisins du zero (neighbors of zero), jeu zero (zero game), le tiers du cylindre (thirds of the wheel), orphelins (orphans), neighbor bets, final bets, and full complete bets (also known as “maximums”). Each of these offers novel new bets to those who are only familiar with the inside and outside betting options. Instead of choosing wagers based on standard categories, they look at the wheel itself and divide it into interesting sections.
French betting is considered to be specific to advanced players and (sometimes) high rollers. When you make a called bet, you then place chips in 5 or more locations around the betting table, so you need to know what you’re doing. The full maximum wager is considered a betting option for high stakes gamblers because it includes the placement of a minimum of 40 bets placed at once. Unless you enjoy complicated wagering, we wouldn’t recommend you try them. If you want to enjoy advanced wagering opportunities, try the French bets.
